Big Walk Multiplayer Guide
Big Walk is a cooperative online walker-talker for 2 to 12 players. Everything below is taken from the official Big Walk FAQ and press kit.
Player counts and session sizes
- Sessions support 2 to 12 players.
- Each time the host starts a session, they choose a 2-player, 3-player, or 4+ player version of the world. Some things in the world adapt to that choice.
- Think of the setting as the minimum number of players, not the maximum. If some friends will drop out mid-session, pick a lower number.
- There is no single-player mode and no online matchmaking — Big Walk is designed to be played with the same group over multiple sessions.
Hosting and saves
- The host is the keeper of the save game and all progress. The host saves automatically.
- The host must start the session first; other players then connect to it.
- When the host stops the session, all other players are disconnected. To continue the journey later, the host needs to host again.
Joining a friend's game
- If you are friends on the platform (Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo), the host's game appears in a menu of active friend games.
- Otherwise, use a Join Code — a short, unique code generated every time the host starts a session. The host shares it so you can join.
- The Mac App Store version does not support Game Center, so you must use a Join Code there.
- Your session is visible to friends and friends-of-friends, and anyone who knows the Join Code can join. Set a password to control who gets in.
Crossplay
Big Walk has full crossplay: players on Steam (PC and Mac), the Mac App Store, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 can all play together in the same session.
Voice and text chat
- Big Walk uses in-game proximity voice chat and in-game text chat with the same features and limitations: voices fade across distances, echo down corridors, muffle through walls, and crackle through walkie-talkies.
- You can play the whole game with text chat only — your messages will have the same distance and soundproof-glass limits.
- Talking outside the game is not allowed: the in-game chat is what makes Big Walk fun, and playing with an external app means missing the best parts.
Version compatibility
- Version numbers look like 1.2.3. Only the first two numbers need to match for players to join the same game.
- The latest version is 1.4.8, which fixes a known issue with quiet voices for some users.
Quick troubleshooting
- If a friend's game is not showing up, add them as a friend first — or just use their Join Code.
- If you cannot connect, make sure the host has loaded into the world, check internet connections, and confirm every device's system clock is accurate.
- If voices sound quiet, update to 1.4.8 and check each microphone's input volume and mute mode.
